The audit trail that can't lie
Everything in this series comes back to one thread: a record of what happened that can't be quietly changed after the fact.
Provisioning a tenant, granting someone a permission, editing an operational config, pulling the kill-switch, approving a held action — they all emit a signed audit event, and those events land hash-chained on the same append-only ledger as the money itself. Each entry carries a fingerprint of the one before it, so you can't rewrite history without breaking the chain in a way that's immediately visible. Tamper with entry #400 and #401 through the end stop agreeing with it. The ledger doesn't trust you not to lie; it makes the lie show.
This is what "forensic-ready by default" actually means. Not that we can generate an audit report if a regulator asks — anyone can format a table after the fact. It means the trustworthy record is a property of the system, produced as things happen, not assembled afterwards from logs you hope are complete and honest.
And it closes the loop on the whole sovereign thesis. One ledger for identity, money and compliance was the bet. This is the payoff: because everything settles in the same place and signs as it goes, the answer to "what happened, who did it, and can you prove it?" is always yes — for a transaction, a config change, or the decision to hit stop.
Honest note: an audit trail you can edit is theatre, and a hash chain is only as honest as your refusal to add a back door "just for admins." The discipline isn't the cryptography — that's the easy part. It's never building the override that would make a bad day more convenient, because the first time you use it, the trail stops being one.
That's the trust layer. The last question is the one everyone actually asks: how did one person build all of this? That's a series of its own — with the receipts.
